Author bio
Virginia Heath grew up just outside London, in Hayes, and has spent most of her life close enough to the city to keep its streets, neighborhoods, and history close at hand. That long familiarity shows up all through her fiction. Even when her stories head into country houses, quiet villages, or coastal settings, there is usually a strong sense of place behind them, and a clear affection for the past.
Sleep, it turns out, has always been part of the story.
As a girl, she took a long time to drift off, so she made up stories in her head while staring at the ceiling. Those bedtime tales grew more complicated as she got older, sometimes stretching on for days or even weeks before she reached the happy ending. Eventually she stopped just telling herself stories and started writing them down, which is a pretty good way for an insomniac to make peace with the night.
Before publishing fiction, Heath taught history to teenagers at a British secondary school. She had wanted to write for years, but the turning point came in her mid-forties, when she realized that if she did not make a serious try, she might never do it. She stepped back from full-time teaching, wrote on her days off, and then left the classroom for good. Her debut novel, That Despicable Rogue, arrived in 2016, and she has been busy ever since.
That late start gave her books a grounded, lived-in ease.
Readers often come to Heath for the same reasons. Her romances are funny without turning flippant, warm without becoming sugary, and full of people who feel a little rumpled by life before they get their happy ending. Books like A Warriner to Protect Her, The Mysterious Lord Millcroft, Never Fall for Your Fiancée, and All's Fair in Love and War show the range of what she does well: wounded heroes, capable heroines, sharp banter, family chaos, and just enough suspense or social trouble to keep everything moving.
She writes mostly Regency romance, though she has also played in the Victorian era, and she clearly enjoys the furniture of the genre. Spies, governesses, grumpy aristocrats, wallflowers, doctors, writers, and women who are far more sensible than the men around them all turn up in her work. So do households in disorder, siblings who meddle, villages that know everybody's business, and characters trying to rebuild a life that has gone off course.
Another big part of her appeal is tone. Heath likes emotional stakes, but she also likes fun. A fake engagement can spiral into disaster. A sensible marriage bargain can turn inconveniently real. A man who thinks he wants a quiet life often ends up knocked sideways by the most troublesome woman in the room. That mix of humor and heart runs through both her earlier category romances and her later Regency rom-coms.
Now she writes from near London, where she lives with her husband and their Labrador, Trevor. She has described herself as a lifelong insomniac, a former history teacher, and a committed drinker of far too much English tea, which feels very on brand. More than thirty books and four Romantic Novel of the Year Award nominations in, she is still telling love stories, still wandering through the past, and, by her own account, still taking forever to fall asleep.
