Truth Be Told
by Kendra Elliot
2017
A brutal storm isolates Solitude, Oregon, just as a child witnesses a double homicide and two FBI agents are found shot in their submerged SUV. With the only road out washed away, Stevie Duncan and her husband Zane know a relentless killer is trapped there with them.
Series background & context
Rogue Justice brings the long Solitude, Oregon saga to a tense, storm-lashed close. Co-written by Kendra Elliot and Melinda Leigh, this two-novella set features many of the same characters readers met in Rogue River, Rogue Winter, and Rogue Vows—now dealing with crimes that feel bigger and more desperate.
The first novella, written by Leigh, centers on Detective Seth Harding as he responds to what looks like another double homicide, only to discover a terrified boy chained in the basement. The child won’t speak, but it’s obvious he knows more than he can say. Seth and his wife, social worker Carly Taylor, take him into their home as a dangerous storm bears down on the county.
In Elliot’s companion story, Truth Be Told, police officers Stevie Duncan and her husband Zane face the fallout from that same storm. Heavy rain isolates Solitude from the outside world just as a series of grisly events piles up: a mute child witness to murder, an unidentified body washing ashore, and two FBI agents found shot in their SUV at a submerged bridge. With the only road out destroyed, everyone understands that the killer is trapped in town with them.
The result feels like a locked-room mystery stretched over an entire community, with floodwaters replacing four walls.
Rogue Justice works best if you’ve already spent time with the Taylors, Zane, and Stevie in the earlier Rogue sets, but it also functions as a compact thriller about what happens when secrets, past cases, and old grievances finally collide. The novellas showcase what Elliot and Leigh do well together: small-town stakes, one or two intense days of action, and couples who have to rely on hard-earned trust when the usual backup can’t get through.
