Series background & context
The Rocky Mountain K9 Unit books move the action to Monroe, Colorado, but keep the same mix of suspense, warmth, and rugged mountain atmosphere. This series follows police officers and their dogs as they protect women in danger, hunt killers, and try to build something steady in a town that keeps attracting trouble. Each novel focuses on a different couple, but the emotional threads and outside threats carry from one book to the next.
The dogs matter here. They are not cute window dressing or an afterthought. The K9 partners work, track, alert, comfort, and occasionally help shove very stubborn humans in the right direction. That gives the series a grounded, day-to-day rhythm, police work, kennel chores, training, patrol, and small-town life, even when the danger level is climbing.
It starts with Run to Ground, where grieving officer Theo Bosco is pulled into Juliet Jackson's fight to keep her younger siblings safe. On the Chase pairs recovering officer Hugh Murdoch with Kaylee Ramay, a witness hiding under a false identity. Survive the Night brings in gentle, animal-loving Otto Gunnersen and Sarah Clifton, who is trying to escape a violent criminal family. Through the Fire closes the set with new officer Kit Jernigan and fire spotter Wesley March as old wounds, and old enemies, refuse to stay buried.
The dogs are heroes, but the people are a mess in the best way.
That is really the appeal. Monroe feels like a place full of odd, decent people who keep choosing each other. The books are protective and often sweet, but never sleepy. There are snipers, stalkers, criminal family ties, betrayals, and long memories. At the same time, there is humor, community gossip, and a strong sense that this town will rally around its own.
If you want romantic suspense that balances danger with comfort, this is a great series to pick up. Read it for the working dogs, the on-the-run heroines, the quietly devoted officers, and the way each book widens the circle while pushing the larger story forward.
