Author bio
Katie Ruggle grew up in Minnesota and has said she basically lived at her local library. Books were there early, and the idea of being a writer was there early too. Still, she did not take a straight line into publishing. Before novels took over, she worked as a mechanical engineer, which helps explain the practical streak that runs through her fiction.
She also built a life that sounds a lot like one of her own setups. Ruggle earned a degree in law enforcement, graduated from the Police Academy, and got ice-rescue certification. She has trained in Krav Maga, boxing, gymnastics, and cold-water rescue diving. That hands-on background shows up all through her books, where danger tends to feel physical, specific, and very cold.
For a stretch, she lived off the grid in a solar- and wind-powered house in the Rocky Mountains. That experience gave her more than scenery. It gave her the texture of mountain weather, remote roads, creaky cabins, and the kind of isolation that can feel either peaceful or terrifying, depending on who is coming up the trail.
She really does write what she knows.
Her early romantic suspense novels lean hard into that mix of competence, wilderness, and heart. In Hold Your Breath, a new diver and a rigid rescue captain collide after a training exercise turns up a body. Gone Too Deep takes a city woman and a nearly silent survival expert deep into dangerous mountain country. The appeal is easy to see: capable heroines, gruff but decent heroes, real outdoor stakes, and a welcome thread of humor running through the tension.
That same balance carries into Run to Ground, where a grieving K9 officer gets pulled into protecting a woman hiding with her siblings, and into In Her Sights, which swaps rescue teams for bounty-hunting sisters without losing the Colorado danger. More recently, Fish Out of Water shows another side of her work, still outdoorsy, still funny, but a little softer around the edges, with a disappearing sister, a cranky hermit, and a trek through the Rockies.
There is usually a dog nearby.
Across her books, Ruggle returns to a few favorite ingredients: found family, protective communities, women who are more capable than people first assume, and men who look intimidating but turn out to be absolute marshmallows. She likes small towns, big wilderness, working dogs, rescue crews, bounty hunters, and people who have to keep moving even when they are scared. She also writes steamier romance as Katie Allen, and romantasy as Katie McCarthy, which tells you something about her range and her sense of fun.
Now she is back in Minnesota, where she lives with her family. When she is not writing, she rides horses, trains her dogs, travels when she can, and teaches horseback riding in her spare time. It all fits. Even off the page, Katie Ruggle comes across like someone who would rather learn the rescue skill, take the cold plunge, and then come home and turn the whole thing into a love story.
