The Rockwell and Decker series follows criminal psychologist Olivia Rockwell and Detective Will Decker as they investigate violent crimes in Fog Harbor, a small coastal California town where everyone seems to know someone connected to the case. Olivia returns to Fog Harbor to look after her younger sister, even though the town is tied to a painful family history. In Her Perfect Bones, a missing teenager and a murdered girl pull Olivia closer to the secrets surrounding her own father. One Child Alive raises the stakes again after a family is killed in a beach-house fire and a terrified young boy becomes the only survivor.

Fog Harbor matters as much as any character. It is scenic, close-knit, and hard to leave behind, but it also contains a prison, old loyalties, and plenty of people with reasons to conceal the truth. The town gives the novels a contained feel, where danger can come from a familiar face or a place that ought to be safe.
