Series background & context

The Rockwell and Decker series follows criminal psychologist Olivia Rockwell and Detective Will Decker as they investigate violent crimes in Fog Harbor, a small coastal California town where everyone seems to know someone connected to the case. The books mix police investigation with psychological insight, but they also give Olivia and Will personal problems that make every new crime feel more dangerous.

Olivia returns to Fog Harbor to look after her younger sister, even though the town is tied to a painful family history. Her father is in prison for murder, and that fact shadows the way she sees the criminal justice system, her patients, and herself. She knows how to read people, but knowing what someone is capable of does not always make them easier to stop.

Will Decker is the local detective who initially finds Olivia’s involvement more frustrating than helpful. He has his own history in Fog Harbor and a career that cannot absorb many more mistakes. Their working relationship grows case by case, as each learns when to challenge the other and when to trust what the other sees.

The series begins with Watch Her Vanish, when the discovery of a murdered teacher draws Olivia and Will into a case that appears to point toward one of Olivia’s prison patients. In Her Perfect Bones, a missing teenager and a murdered girl pull Olivia closer to the secrets surrounding her own father. One Child Alive raises the stakes again after a family is killed in a beach-house fire and a terrified young boy becomes the only survivor.

Fog Harbor matters as much as any character. It is scenic, close-knit, and hard to leave behind, but it also contains a prison, old loyalties, and plenty of people with reasons to conceal the truth. The town gives the novels a contained feel, where danger can come from a familiar face or a place that ought to be safe.

Read these books in order. Each mystery has its own resolution, but Olivia’s family history, Will’s past, and the slow development of their partnership carry from one installment to the next. Readers can expect crime thrillers with emotional stakes, practical investigation, and two leads who have to confront their own baggage while trying to keep other people alive.
