D.J. Butler's Rock Band Fights Evil series is a pulp-style urban fantasy about a group of musicians who keep running into supernatural trouble. The title is literal. Their concerts are interrupted by monsters, their road trips lead to cults and cursed places, and their personal baggage is almost as dangerous as the things trying to kill them.

The first book, Hellhound on My Trail, brings Mike Archuleta into the group. Mike is a troubled bassist who expects one last miserable gig, not a hellhound crashing the show. The band he joins is already an unusual crew: Jim is the guarded frontman with a connection to Lucifer, Adrian is an organist and sorcerer whose narcolepsy is a serious tactical problem, and Eddie is an ex-Marine guitarist with a talent for improvising under pressure.

They are not exactly heaven's chosen heroes.

The early books, including Snake Handlin' Man, Crow Jane, and Devil Sent the Rain, keep the action close to roadside America. A snake-worshipping cult, a dangerous immortal woman, cursed magic, and threats aimed at individual band members all push the group to work together. The stories are short and fast, with the pace and cliffhanger spirit of old pulp serials.

Later installments widen the map. The band is drawn into the Mirror Queendom and eventually toward Hell itself, where the stakes around Jim, Azazel's hoof, and the group's survival become harder to separate. The Good Son puts Jim's past near the center of the action, while Earth Angel continues the band's rough journey through a world where deals with dark powers tend to come due.

Music gives the series its personality, even when the characters are not on stage. These are people held together by shared danger, old mistakes, gallows humor, and the fact that walking away is rarely an option. They bicker, scramble, and occasionally make the kind of plan that only sounds sensible because the alternative is worse.

It is loud, messy, and happily weird.
