Author bio
Robert Muchamore grew up in Tufnell Park in north London, the youngest of four children in a busy, extended household. His dad delivered milk, his mum cleaned houses, and he spent a lot of time building Lego and hiding in books.
At school he was bright but not especially academic. He went to St Johns Upper Holloway and then Acland Burghley School, scraped a D in A‑Level economics, and left without a grand plan beyond a vague sense that architecture, photography or writing all sounded interesting.
Instead of university he drifted into work, eventually landing a job as an office junior at an heir‑hunting and private investigation firm in central London.
That job turned into a career. For more than a decade he traced missing heirs, dug through dusty records and watched families fall out over money. It was not glamorous, but it gave him a front‑row seat on how people behave under pressure, a vein of real‑world detail that later fed the investigations and scams in his novels.
In the late 1990s he visited his sister in Australia, where his nephew complained that there were no exciting books aimed at kids his age. Muchamore took the challenge seriously. Back home he started writing in the evenings, trying to create the sort of sharp, unsentimental thrillers he would have loved as a teenager.
The result was The Recruit, first in the CHERUB series, about James Adams, an eleven‑year‑old tearaway recruited into a secret branch of British intelligence that trains children as undercover agents. Published in 2004, the book quickly found a passionate readership, picked up major children’s prizes and allowed Muchamore to leave his day job to write full time.
Across twelve main CHERUB novels and a shorter World Book Day special, he followed James and his sister Lauren through missions that took on drug gangs, religious cults, eco‑terrorists and organised crime, all while keeping an eye on friendships, sibling rivalry and first crushes. A later sequence often called CHERUB 2, beginning with People’s Republic, shifts the focus to new agent Ryan Sharma and a global smuggling clan, bringing back older characters in new roles.
Muchamore has always been happy to expand his universe. Henderson’s Boys jumps back to the 1940s to show how naval officer Charles Henderson and a handful of French and British kids founded the wartime version of CHERUB. The Rock War novels swap spies for guitars, following three teenagers through the controlled chaos of a televised talent show. More recently his Robin Hood books rework the legend for the 2020s, with a tech‑savvy twelve‑year‑old outlaw taking on corrupt police and billionaires.
Alongside the series he has written standalones such as Killer T, a near‑future story about gene editing, and Arctic Zoo, which follows two teenagers caught up in protest movements and mental‑health crises in London and Nigeria. He has spoken openly about his own spell in a psychiatric hospital in his forties, and how listening to other patients there shaped the characters and themes in that book.
These days he writes full time in London, follows football with a soft spot for Arsenal and keeps up a dry, self‑deprecating sense of humour. What has not changed since those early CHERUB drafts is his aim to give young readers fast, honest stories that feel like real life turned up a notch.
