Author bio

Robert Goddard started his life in a very ordinary way, which is ironic considering the extraordinary trouble his characters usually find themselves in. Born in Fareham, Hampshire, in 1954, he followed a path that seemed destined for a quiet, academic life. He went to Cambridge to read History, a subject that would clearly shape his future storytelling. However, his route to becoming a full-time author wasn't a straight line.

He spent years testing out different careers, trying to find one that stuck. He gave journalism a shot, but it wasn't quite right. He tried teaching, but that didn't fit either. Eventually, he settled into a role as an educational administrator in Devon.

It was a sensible, steady job. But while he was managing school business by day, his mind was elsewhere. He spent his free time dreaming up twisted plots and complex narratives.

That double life ended in 1986 with the publication of Past Caring. This wasn't just a first novel; it was a statement of intent. It set the template for everything that would follow. It proved that he could take a regular person, someone with no special skills or training, and tangle them up in a historical conspiracy where the stakes were life or death.

The central theme of his work is simple but effective: the past refuses to stay buried.

In a Goddard novel, history is never just background noise. It is an active force. A secret from fifty years ago can still destroy lives today. This is why he is often called the "master of the clever twist." He has a special knack for writing dual-timeline mysteries that feel seamless. He mixes the quiet, dusty work of archival research with high-stakes thriller elements.

You might be reading about a crime in the present day, only to realize the answer lies in a diary entry from World War I.

His characters help ground these wild plots. You won't find muscle-bound action heroes or super-spies in his books. His protagonists are refreshingly normal. They are often unemployed historians, drifting caretakers, or quiet secretaries. They are people who have stumbled upon something they shouldn't have seen—a photograph, a letter, or a will.

Because they are just ordinary folks, they are vulnerable. When they get chased, you worry for them because they don't know how to fight back.

Goddard’s versatility keeps his readers coming back. He is equally happy writing a gripping standalone mystery as he is crafting a multi-book series. His settings are just as varied, moving comfortably from the polite drawing rooms of the Edwardian era to the busy streets of modern-day Tokyo.

These days, he lives in Cornwall with his wife, Vaunda. Despite his long list of bestsellers, he keeps his head down and focuses on the work. He continues to write the kind of intricate, plot-heavy novels that fans love. He is a writer who respects the reader's intelligence, offering puzzles that keep you guessing right until the very final page.
