Into the Blue

by Robert Goddard

1990

Harry Barnett, a down-on-his-luck caretaker in Rhodes, is the prime suspect when a young woman vanishes. To clear his name, he returns to England and follows a trail of photographs that reveal a conspiracy far bigger than a simple disappearance.

Series background & context

Harry Barnett is about as far from James Bond as you can possibly get. He isn’t a spy, he doesn’t drive an Aston Martin, and he certainly doesn’t possess a license to kill. When we are first introduced to him, he is a middle-aged Englishman who has spent decades drifting through life without leaving much of a mark. He’s a bit scruffy, often broke, and generally carries the air of a man who expects things to go wrong.

He is, in short, a professional failure.

But that is precisely why he works so well as the hero of this trilogy. Robert Goddard specializes in putting ordinary people into extraordinary situations, and Harry is the ultimate example. In the first book, Into the Blue, Harry is enjoying a quiet, low-responsibility gig caretaking a villa on the Greek island of Rhodes. It seems like the perfect escape from his past mistakes back in England. That is, until a young woman in his care disappears, and he becomes the prime suspect.

This pattern defines Harry’s life throughout the series. He doesn’t go looking for trouble; he usually just wants a quiet drink and a simple life. Unfortunately for him, trouble has a nasty habit of knocking on his door.

As the series moves through Out of the Sun and concludes with Never Go Back, the stakes get surprisingly high. Harry finds himself pulled out of his comfort zone and dropped into locations ranging from the corporate boardrooms of the United States to the gloomy, atmospheric peaks of the Scottish Highlands. The plots are classic Goddard: dense, multi-layered puzzles that mix historical secrets with modern-day crimes. Harry has to grapple with everything from scientific conspiracies and mathematical breakthroughs to the sudden appearance of long-lost relatives.

What makes these books stand out isn’t just the intricate plotting, but Harry’s reaction to it all. He is constantly out of his depth. He gets scared, he makes mistakes, and he often wishes he was anywhere else. He doesn’t solve crimes because he’s a brilliant detective; he solves them because he is stubborn and refuses to let the wealthy and powerful pin the blame on him.

Readers tend to love Harry because he feels real. He has a messy romantic history, he worries about money, and he knows he’s past his prime. Yet, when the chips are down, he steps up.

This trilogy offers a refreshing break from sleek, invincible action heroes. It’s a character study of a man trying to redeem a wasted life, wrapped up in three heavy doses of mystery. By the time you reach the final page, you won’t just be impressed by the twists—you’ll be cheering for Harry to finally catch a break.
