Author bio

RJ Blain is the name many readers meet first when they want urban fantasy with teeth, jokes, and a very good chance that somebody is about to make a terrible magical decision. She is a USA Today bestselling author with more than eighty books spread across multiple pen names, and that sheer volume tells you something right away. She likes big worlds, long series, strange creatures, and heroines who do not fold when things get ugly.

Under the RJ Blain name, she tends to work in paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and what she happily calls magical romantic comedy, sometimes with a body count. If you start with Playing with Fire, Karma, or Booked for Murder, you get a good sense of the range. One book might give you a supernatural coffee shop and a romance full of sparks. The next might hand you kidnappings, werewolves, magical politics, or librarians who are much more dangerous than they look.

That mix is the point.

Blain also writes under several other names, including Susan Copperfield, Trillian Anderson, Bernadette Franklin, Audrey Greene, G.P. Robbins, and Lilith Daniels. She has said she uses pen names to separate different kinds of speculative fiction, which makes sense once you see how many tones she likes to juggle. Even so, there are clear threads running through the work: capable women, found family, sharp banter, odd little creatures, and plots that refuse to stay simple.

Readers who stick around usually do it for the voice. Books like Outfoxed, Water Viper, Client from Hell, and Winter Wolf all live in different corners of her catalog, but they share a similar energy. The leads are often practical, stubborn, funny under pressure, and surrounded by people who are either extremely helpful or extremely dangerous. Often both. Blain likes romance, but she usually makes her characters earn it.

And yes, the puns are real.

Her public author bios are packed with the same offbeat humor that shows up in the novels. She jokes about a Moleskine journal obsession, a fixation on pens, and a habit of punning without warning. She has also described herself as an aspiring cartographer and sumi-e painter, a cat herder, a gamer, and someone whose backup career plan involves becoming a spy. It is a silly list, but it also explains a lot about the books. The worlds are mapped with care, the jokes arrive fast, and even the wildest setups usually have a practical backbone.

Blain has also talked about the work behind long-running series. She keeps notes and story bibles to track settings, recurring characters, and mystery plots, which helps explain how so many shared worlds stay connected. That planning shows up across series like Witch & Wolf, the Magical Romantic Comedies, and Vigilante Magical Librarians, where a throwaway detail in one book can matter much later. Even when the stories are funny, the structure underneath them is not casual.

As for life off the page, the broad outline is public even if the private details are not. She has written about living with her husband, obeying the commands of her fish, loving cats, horses, unicorns, tacos, pink, and games like The Sims 4 and World of Warcraft. That feels about right. RJ Blain's books are crowded, energetic, a little chaotic, and very aware that fantasy can be dark without ever giving up its sense of fun.
