Water Witch
by RJ Blain
2019
This anthology follows Dustin Walker as his witchcraft awakens and he discovers the leviathan inside him. It also adds extra stories from the Witch and Wolf world, with more depth, danger, and emotional fallout.
Series background & context
The Dustin Walker books are a smaller, more intimate branch of the larger Witch & Wolf World. Dustin first appears in Beneath a Blood Moon, but this series turns the spotlight onto him and lets readers spend more time with a character who clearly has much more going on than a quick appearance can show.
At the center of the story is Dustin's awakening magic. He is not just learning that he has power. He is learning that the power inside him is dangerous, strange, and deeply tied to water and the leviathan he carries. That gives the series a strong coming-into-his-own feeling, even when the tone turns dark.
Dustin is easy to root for.
What makes this series stand out is its closeness. Instead of racing from crisis to crisis the way some of Blain's novels do, Water Witch and the related material spend more time on growth, family, fear, and the uneven process of learning what kind of person you want to become when your life is anything but normal. The supernatural threats matter, but so do the quieter moments.
Because Water Witch is an anthology, the series also works as a character deep dive. It fills in background, adds texture to the wider setting, and shows how Dustin fits into a world already crowded with witches, wolves, hunters, and damaged survivors. It is connected reading, but it feels personal instead of sprawling.
If you already like the Witch & Wolf World, this series gives you more of its emotional side. If you are coming in just for Dustin, expect a darker, more character-focused fantasy about power, identity, and the hard work of becoming yourself without letting the monster inside make the decisions for you.
