The Prince of Beverly Hills

by Stuart Woods

2004

In 1940s Hollywood, former cop Rick Barron takes a job running security at Centurion Studios. When a star is killed and the studio wants it buried, Rick has to investigate in a world where everyone is acting, and some are deadly.

Series background & context

Rick Barron is Stuart Woods’s nod to classic Hollywood, with the volume turned up on danger. The two Rick Barron novels are set in the late 1940s, when the studio system still ran the town and a good cover story was part of the business. Rick is a former police detective who lands a job as head of security for Centurion Studios in Beverly Hills, and he quickly learns that the film industry has its own rules for justice.

Centurion is a world of soundstages, back-lot secrecy, and executives who care more about tomorrow’s headlines than today’s crime scene. Rick’s job is to keep productions on schedule and keep scandals from becoming public disasters. That means he’s forever negotiating between what the cops want, what the studio wants, and what the powerful people involved are willing to do to protect themselves. He’s an insider with access, but he’s still an outsider when it comes to the studio’s politics.

The mysteries mix murder investigation with show-business power games. Rick interviews stars, hustles information out of bit players and fixers, and follows leads through mansions, clubs, and studio offices where everyone is performing, even when they’re telling the truth. The books have a noir edge without being heavy, and the period setting gives the crimes a different texture: phones that don’t trace easily, travel that takes time, and reputations that can be destroyed by a rumor. You’ll also feel postwar tension in the background, with unions, gossip columns, and political pressure never far away. Rick has to solve crimes while the studio tries to keep the cameras rolling, which creates a constant push and pull.

Rick is competent, but he’s not naïve. He’s seen real police work, and he knows how quickly a case can get warped when money and influence enter the room. He also has to operate inside a corporation that would rather buy a solution than live with one. In practice, that makes him part investigator and part damage control, and both jobs can get him killed.

These are the shortest commitment in Woods’s wider universe, but they still feel like full stories.

If you like mysteries with a strong sense of place, the Rick Barron books deliver a version of Hollywood that’s glamorous on the surface and sharp underneath. They’re good for readers who want a break from modern tech and modern bureaucracy, and who enjoy watching a tough investigator work inside a world built on illusion.
