Series background & context

The Richmond Chronicles is a four‑book historical series that first introduced many readers to Carrie Cromwell and her world. Originally published under Ginny Dye’s pen name, Virginia Gaffney, these novels cover the Civil War years from a deeply personal, Christian perspective.

The story begins in Under the Southern Moon. Carrie has grown up on a comfortable Virginia plantation, surrounded by beauty and secure in her family’s status. Her closest friend, though, is Rose, an enslaved girl who shares her days and her secrets. As rumors of secession grow louder and Fort Sumter falls, Carrie finds herself pulled between loyalty to her father, growing love for plantation owner Robert Borden, and a conscience that keeps whispering that slavery is wrong.

Carry Me Home follows as war sweeps across the South. The easy world Carrie once knew starts to crumble. Young men march off to fight, plantations struggle, and the reality of loss comes closer with every new casualty list. Carrie’s faith and relationships are tested as she tries to decide what “home” means when everything familiar is changing.

In The Tender Rebel, Richmond has become a city defined by the war. Carrie steps into nursing, using her skills to care for wounded Confederate soldiers in crowded hospitals. At the same time, she continues to wrestle with the South’s racial injustice and with her tangled feelings for Robert. The title hints at her struggle to stay gentle and principled in the middle of bloodshed.

The final volume, Magnolia Dreams, brings the series to the later, desperate stages of the conflict. Carrie’s insistence on caring for the wounded from all sides—and for Black patients as well as white—makes her a target for men who see her compassion as betrayal. The violence she faces forces her to decide how far she’s willing to go to live out what she believes.

The Richmond Chronicles lean more toward Christian romance than the broader Bregdan Chronicles, but they share the same core characters and themes: a young woman waking up to injustice, enslaved friends whose stories matter in their own right, and a nation being torn apart and remade. Many readers first encountered these books in their original editions and later discovered that they had been reissued and expanded as the opening volumes of the longer Bregdan saga.

If you want a contained, four‑book arc focused tightly on the war years and on Carrie’s early journey, this series offers that. If you fall in love with the characters and want to know what happens after Appomattox, you can move straight on to the corresponding Bregdan titles and continue with Reconstruction and beyond.
