Author bio
Ginny Dye grew up in North Carolina and likes to say she was born with a suitcase in her hand. From early on she felt pulled toward the wider world, and as an adult she followed that pull across the United States, living in many states and exploring every single one.
Along the way she worked an unusual mix of jobs. She managed horse ranches in Texas and Oregon, spent years mentoring teenagers around the country, and grabbed any chance she could to hike, bike, raft, or just wander through new places. Beaches, deserts, deep woods, high mountains—she’s tried to soak in all of it.
That love of the outdoors eventually led her to Washington State, where she finally felt she had found home. She writes about standing on trails that climb into snow‑covered mountains, watching eagles and orcas on the Pacific, and looking out at the tall fir trees that surround her house. She calls the land she lives on “Magic Mountain,” and it’s easy to see why it keeps showing up between the lines of her books.
Her road to writing was anything but straight. For years she thought of herself as a doer and organizer rather than an author. Only after a season of illness and deep reflection did she sit down to write her first novel, drawing on the history she loved and the questions she had carried since childhood about justice, faith, and courage.
Those questions came together most powerfully in Storm Clouds Rolling In, the opening volume of the long‑running Bregdan Chronicles. The series follows Carrie Cromwell and a wide circle of family and friends through the Civil War and Reconstruction, weaving together the lives of enslaved people, abolitionists, soldiers, and townspeople. Dye chose the word “Bregdan” because it echoes the idea of braiding many stories into one shared history.
She has never limited herself to one kind of reader. Under her own name and the pen name Virginia Gaffney, she has written historical Christian romances such as the Richmond Chronicles, young adult novels in the Pepper Crest High series, and children’s books like the Fly To Your Dreams and When I Dream series. She has also written nonfiction, including If You Want to Have Your Ultimate Life, Learn From 100+ People Who Already Do!, which grew out of interviews with people who were determined to live with purpose.
A constant thread through all of this is her belief that ordinary people matter. In her fiction, enslaved families, teen girls, older women, and small children all help shape events. In her nonfiction and her work with readers, she pushes that same idea outward: your choices count, even when the world feels overwhelming.
That belief led her to create Millions For Positive Change, a project aimed at gathering people who want to live their best lives while also making a difference for others. She shares free essays, tools, and reflections there, inviting readers to carry what they find in her stories back into their own communities.
Today she still lives in Washington, still walking those mountain trails and watching the light change over the water, and still writing as fast as she can. She jokes that she’ll never live long enough to get every story on the page, but she intends to spend the rest of her life trying.
