Author bio

Richard L Mabry spent most of his working life in medicine, not in publishing. He grew up in north Texas and has said that, apart from about three years overseas in the Air Force, he has lived in Texas all his life.

He earned a BA from the University of North Texas and an MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. After that came specialty training, years in private practice, and eventually a long career that added up to 36 years in medicine. The last 10 of those years were spent as a professor at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.

Before he ever wrote a novel, he was already a serious writer in another field. During his medical career he wrote or edited eight textbooks and published more than 100 papers in medical journals. That background shows up in his fiction, where the hospital details feel solid without taking over the story.

Then life changed.

In 1999, after the sudden death of his first wife of 40 years, Mabry began journaling as a way to get through grief. Friends encouraged him to shape those private pages into something that might help other people, and that became The Tender Scar, his nonfiction book about losing a spouse. It was published in 2006, and it opened a new path for him.

He has said he did not plan on becoming a fiction writer. But after attending a Christian writers conference and learning the basics of nonmedical writing, he started trying his hand at suspense. The road was not instant. He worked for years, piled up rejections, got a contract in 2008, and then published Code Blue in 2010, the novel that launched his Prescription For Trouble series.

That late start turned into a real second career.

Readers usually come to Mabry for two things. First, he knows how doctors think, talk, and work under pressure. Second, he likes to drop those doctors into situations where a normal medical problem suddenly becomes personal, dangerous, and morally messy. Books like Stress Test, Critical Condition, Miracle Drug, and Medical Judgment all lean on that mix of professional realism and fast-moving suspense.

His stories are often set in Texas, especially in the small towns, hospitals, and professional circles he knows well. He tends to write about physicians, lawyers, nurses, and police officers who are carrying grief, old mistakes, or shaken faith along with the case in front of them. Even when the plot moves quickly, there is usually a quieter thread underneath about trust, loss, forgiveness, or second chances.

He has described his work as medical suspense with heart, and that is a fair summary. The suspense matters, but so do the personal costs. His debut novel, Code Blue, was a semifinalist for the International Thriller Writers debut novel award, and later books were finalists for several Christian fiction honors.

These days Mabry lives in north Texas with his wife, Kay. He has also joked that retirement includes writing, reading, trying to improve his golf game, and convincing his family that staring into space at his desk really does count as work.
