He works in Albuquerque, usually for not enough money, and he keeps landing cases that sound simple until they turn strange, messy, or deadly. He is a little outmatched, a little stubborn, and more decent than he probably wants to admit.

These are soft-boiled mysteries with dust on their shoes.

The series lives in a very specific Albuquerque, one of old motels, side streets, fading neon, strip malls, and people who are just hanging on. Brewer uses that setting well. The city is not just a backdrop. It shapes the cases, the mood, and even the humor. Bubba is often dealing with local hustlers, small-time crooks, pimps, reporters, cultish true believers, rich eccentrics, and rivals who make his life harder than it already is.

The first book, Lonely Street, tells you almost everything you need to know about the series. Bubba gets hired for what seems like a bodyguard job and quickly winds up in a case involving Elvis, or at least someone claiming to be Elvis. That mix of deadpan absurdity and real danger runs through the books that follow. In Baby Face, Witchy Woman, Dirty Pool, and Monkey Man, the setups are different, but the rhythm stays familiar. Bubba tries to do the job, gets knocked off balance, and then has to keep moving while the body count and the confusion rise.

One of the best things here is the supporting cast. Felicia Quattlebaum becomes especially important as the series goes on, bringing a sharper, more grounded energy that plays well against Bubba's fumbling instincts. There are also recurring enemies, awkward clients, and bad actors who keep pushing Bubba into corners. The books do not turn him into a superhero. He stays vulnerable, sometimes wrong, and often one step behind.

That matters.

Even with the humor, these are still crime novels. The stakes can be personal, financial, or physical, and sometimes all three at once. Bubba may be funny, but he is not floating through a harmless cartoon. He gets scared, hurt, embarrassed, and occasionally forced to deal with old family wounds along with the case in front of him.

If you like private-eye fiction that is less slick and more human, this series is easy to warm to. The books are fast, odd, and full of crooked momentum. They also work as a long look at one man trying, over and over, to get through bad situations without losing the last scraps of his dignity. Start with Lonely Street and read forward if you can. Seeing Bubba slowly become family is part of the fun.
