Series background & context

Resurrection Man follows Mitch Shelley, a man whose death never seems to be permanent. Each return brings a different superpower, leaving him with an ability he couldn't necessarily have predicted or chosen. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's 2011 series uses that premise for a superhero mystery in which the central character needs to understand himself while other people and powers pursue him for reasons of their own.

Dead Again introduces this version of Mitch through the strange pattern governing his existence. Surviving death might sound like protection against the worst that can happen, but he doesn't have the information he needs to treat his condition as a reliable gift. The changing powers complicate his efforts to get his bearings. He has to respond to danger with whatever his latest resurrection has given him, even while asking why this is happening at all.

Death gives him another problem to solve.

The mystery concerns more than the mechanism of his return. Mitch's past is uncertain, and discovering it makes him vulnerable to people who know things he doesn't. The Body Doubles, a pair of dangerous pursuers, are among those drawn into the chase. A man trying to investigate his own life cannot easily decide whom to trust when others see him as a target, an asset or something stranger. His search for answers repeatedly becomes a struggle to keep moving long enough to ask the next question.

The supernatural side of the story widens that danger. Forces of good and evil have an interest in Mitch's soul, bringing his personal predicament into a conflict beyond ordinary criminal activity. His body and his soul can attract different agendas. That distinction matters because coming back from a physical death doesn't mean he understands what each resurrection might mean to the beings following him. The series keeps the promise of another life close to the threat of someone else trying to claim it.

A Matter of Death and Life continues the pursuit and brings the Suicide Squad into the struggle over Mitch. Their interest in his body adds another kind of pressure to the supernatural contest. Different groups may want different things from him, but their competing intentions leave him little room to live on his own terms. The connected story combines immediate action with questions about identity, ownership and whether survival counts as freedom when other people keep deciding what your existence is worth.

Begin with Dead Again and continue with A Matter of Death and Life. These collections belong to the 2011 run, so they provide a focused route through this version of the character's mystery. The tone blends superhero action with horror and a pursuit thriller. Mitch's unusual ability keeps reopening the story, but the suspense comes from what remains unknown: why he returns, who is waiting when he does and whether learning the truth can give him control over the life he keeps receiving.
