Series background & context
Rescued from Ruin is Braden's big Regency world. It starts with families already connected, tempers already hot, and reputations always one bad night away from disaster. These books are built around London ballrooms, country houses, family obligations, and the kind of gossip that can shove two people straight to the altar.
The main thread runs through the Lacey and Huxley families, plus their friends and future in-laws. A prequel, Ever Yours, Annabelle, sets up Annabelle Huxley and Robert Conrad. Then the series rolls into books for Victoria Lacey, Jane Huxley, Colin Lacey, and other familiar faces, so one romance often plants the seeds for the next.
Nobody gets a quiet courtship here.
The recurring hook is scandal. A reckless wager, a compromising situation, a fake engagement, a desperate bargain, a murder investigation, or one badly timed kiss can change everything. Braden likes pairings that start under pressure, then grow into something deeper through stubbornness, loyalty, and a lot of friction. Marriage of convenience, long pining, redemption arcs, and damaged reputations show up again and again.
Even with dukes, earls, marquesses, and titled families all over the place, the tone is usually more intimate than grand. The heroines are often underestimated, shy, practical, or written off as plain, while the heroes can be cold, wounded, reckless, secretive, or far too used to getting their way. Watching those masks crack is a big part of the fun.
There is also an ongoing story underneath the individual couples. Characters and conflicts carry forward, especially around family loyalties, old injuries, and dangerous figures moving at the edges of polite society. That means the novels can stand alone, but reading in order gives the best payoff, especially once recurring trouble starts catching up with people readers met earlier.
If you want historical romance with sharp banter, emotional messes, loyal friendships, and a lot of "well, now they have to marry" energy, this is the Braden series most people start with. And if you end up attached to Lady Wallingham and the broader family circle, you will probably want to stay a while.
