Series background & context

The Renegade Justice books belong to Morgan Ames, and Morgan is not a standard thriller heroine. She is a teenage sociopath, the daughter of a serial killer, and a girl who has spent most of her life being trained to become something monstrous. At the start of the series, her goal is both simple and almost impossible: stop killing. For good.

That setup gives the books their charge. Morgan is smart, manipulative, funny in a dark way, and often the most dangerous person in the room. But she is also trying, in her own crooked fashion, to build a life that is not defined by her father. The tension is not just whether she can solve the case. It is whether she can stay herself while becoming someone better.

She does not do that alone. Jenna Galloway and Andre Stone pull her into investigative work, often through their security business, and Nick Callahan serves as one of the few adults who sees both Morgan's damage and her potential. Those relationships give the series its shape. Morgan is always testing boundaries, loyalties, and her own promises.

The cases are high-stakes and morally messy. In Fight Dirty, Morgan goes undercover inside a brutal teen treatment center. In later books she faces her escaped father, violence aimed at vulnerable children, vigilante murder, and bomb threats that turn recovery into chaos all over again. The details change from book to book, but the larger question stays the same: can someone raised as a predator choose another path when violence still makes sense to her?

Morgan is the hook.

These books move fast, but they are also character studies wrapped inside thrillers. They are darker, stranger, and more psychologically slippery than many FBI series, which is exactly why they stand out. If you like antiheroes, uneasy alliances, and stories that keep asking what justice looks like when the law is not enough, Renegade Justice is where CJ Lyons gets especially interesting.
