Author bio
CJ Lyons grew up in the mountains of central Pennsylvania, around State College, and left home at seventeen for college in North Carolina. Then came medical school in Florida, pediatric residency at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, and a career spent in places where the stakes were never small.
She trained in pediatric emergency medicine and worked in trauma centers, community health, on the Navajo reservation, and as a flight physician. She also worked as a crisis counselor and victim advocate. That background shows up all through her fiction, not as decoration, but as the thing that makes her hospitals, investigations, and frightened families feel real.
She had been telling stories long before any of that. As a kid she wrote, daydreamed, and won school writing contests. In college and med school she leaned toward science fiction and fantasy, but during her internship year in Pittsburgh, after one of the young doctors she knew was murdered, she turned to crime fiction as a way to deal with shock and grief.
That shift changed everything.
Lyons has said writing and medicine came from the same impulse: wanting to help, wanting to make a difference. After seventeen years in pediatrics and emergency medicine, she made the jump to full-time writing. It was not a safe move. Her first scheduled debut was cancelled shortly before publication, but she got the rights back and later published it as Nerves of Steel.
She kept going.
Readers who start with Lifelines get the hospital intensity right away: overworked staff, impossible choices, and danger arriving in the middle of an ordinary shift. Snake Skin introduces Lucy Guardino, a Pittsburgh soccer mom who is also an FBI agent, and shows how much Lyons likes putting capable people under unbearable pressure. Blind Faith pushed her onto the bestseller list, and later books like The Next Widow keep that same mix of speed, fear, and family fallout.
Across her series, you see the same concerns again and again. She writes about people hit by violence who still have to get up and keep going. Doctors, agents, detectives, mothers, teenagers, and damaged survivors all have to choose what kind of person they will be when the easy answers are gone. Even when the plots move fast, the books stay interested in consequences.
That is probably why her phrase "Thrillers with Heart" stuck.
Lyons has won the Thriller Award twice, and her books have ranged from medical suspense to FBI thrillers, YA suspense, and environmental thrillers co-written with Erin Brockovich. She has also taught workshops and spoken to writing audiences for years. These days she writes full time, still pulling from a life that gave her more material than most thriller writers could invent.
