Author bio
K'wan Foye is an urban fiction author from New York City whose books grew out of a need to make sense of the world around him. He started writing as a kind of self-therapy, putting the pressure of street life, family strain, and bad decisions on the page instead of letting them eat at him.
Born and raised in New York, he spent his formative years watching neighborhoods change block by block. That mix of danger, hustle, and everyday humor shows up in almost everything he writes. His stories often feel like someone pulling you into a conversation on a Harlem corner and not letting you go until they are done.
His first novel, Gangsta, began as that personal release and ended up changing his life. The book, a semi-autobiographical tale about Lou-Loc, a Crip hitman who dreams of getting out, landed on the Essence bestseller list and helped put modern street lit in front of a wide audience. It also turned a tiny indie press into a serious player and led to a multi-book deal with a major publisher.
From there he stayed busy. He followed Gangsta with titles like Road Dawgz, Street Dreams, Hoodlum, and Eve, each one digging into a different corner of the underworld, from Harlem blocks to family crime empires. With the Hood Rat books, starting with Hood Rat and Still Hood, he shifted the camera toward women navigating love, survival, and betrayal in the middle of the chaos. Those books introduced characters like Gucci and Yoshi, who would echo through later work.
The character readers talk about most, though, is Animal. Launched in Animal and expanded through a long-running series, he is part feared gunman, part wounded son. The prequel about his childhood shows the abuse and neglect that created him, while later books follow his bloody path from Puerto Rico and Miami back to Harlem. Across those novels, K'wan ties together record labels, cartels, crooked cops, and old enemies in a shared universe that connects to the Hood Rat world.
He has never only written one kind of story. The Fix trilogy, beginning with The Fix, follows Persia Chandler, a sheltered girl pulled into addiction and hustling after a move back toward Harlem. The Diamonds novels, Diamonds and Pearl and The Diamond Empire, mix forbidden romance with a New Orleans–to–New York criminal saga. In Black Lotus and Black Lotus 2, he leans into noir, pairing a masked assassin, Kahllah El-Amin, with a dogged detective in a fast, pulpy crime series.
More recently, books like The Reluctant King and its follow-up, False Idols, trace the King family, a powerful New York clan with one foot in politics and the other in organized crime. On the coming-of-age side, novels such as Promise Broken and Promise Kept follow teenagers caught between school, family expectations, neighborhood loyalties, and the pull of the drug trade.
Along the way he has picked up real-world recognition. He received a Black Author of the Year award from Black Press Radio for the novella Blow, an African American Literary Award for Welfare Wifeys, and Street Lit Book Award Medals in adult fiction for Eviction Notice and Animal. His work has been covered by major magazines and reviewed in library journals, and he has appeared in a documentary about Iceberg Slim as well as on a true-crime TV series.
Off the page, K'wan spends time mentoring at-risk kids, speaking about writing and choices, and running his own imprint, Black Dawn. He lives in New Jersey, where he writes, cooks, and, by his own account, binge-watches supernatural TV with his daughters.
At the center of all of it is a simple throughline: his books are about people trying to survive the hand they were dealt. The settings are loud and sometimes brutal, but the heart of the work is loyalty, family, and what it costs to change your life once the streets know your name.
