It has become proof that the women can back one another when the stakes turn personal.

The books have the balls, flirtation, and quick romantic momentum readers expect from Regency romance. They also keep an eye on the less glittery part of the setting: money worries, family obligations, snobbery, and the thin margin for error allowed to women who do not have much power.

These are light reads with some backbone.
