Reece Hirsch Books in Order

Reece Hirsch writes thrillers built around a very current kind of fear: the idea that a computer, phone, or online account can bring danger straight to your door. His route to fiction began with journalism. Hirsch earned a B.S. in journalism from Northwestern University, then spent several years working in Atlanta. He was an assistant editor at a business magazine and also edited and published an arts and entertainment magazine.

He later earned his law degree from the University of Southern California and built a career in privacy and cybersecurity law. Hirsch was a partner in the San Francisco office of an international law firm and co-headed its privacy and cybersecurity practice. That work gave him a close view of the rules, risks, and blind spots that shape life online.

That mix of reporting and law shows up on every page.

Hirsch's debut, The Insider, follows San Francisco corporate attorney Will Connelly after a colleague's death pulls him into a tangle of insider trading, organized crime, and national-security stakes. The novel was a finalist for the 2011 International Thriller Writers Award for Best First Novel. It also set the pattern for his later work: ordinary professional responsibilities can become dangerous very quickly.

He next created Chris Bruen, the former Department of Justice cybercrimes prosecutor at the center of The Adversary, Intrusion, and Surveillance. These books send Bruen into cases involving a destructive computer virus, stolen search-engine algorithms, and the frightening reach of government monitoring. The threats may be technical, but the stories stay focused on people under pressure, especially Chris and his computer-forensics partner, Zoey Doucet.

With Black Nowhere and Dark Tomorrow, Hirsch shifted to FBI Special Agent Lisa Tanchik, an investigator who works cybercrime cases from the Dark Web to a full-scale attack on the United States. Lisa is capable and determined, but Hirsch also gives her real vulnerabilities, including depression and a past struggle with substance abuse. That makes the work feel personal even when the stakes are national.

Across his fiction, Hirsch returns to privacy, surveillance, hacking, data theft, and the uneasy trade between safety and freedom.
