Series background & context

Red River Valley is Shelly Alexander’s small-town romance series set in Red River, New Mexico. These books are built around cabins, local businesses, town events, and the kind of community where everybody knows your history, or thinks they do. The tone is warm and funny, but the series also spends plenty of time with grief, family strain, damaged reputations, and the slow work of starting over.

Each main book follows a different couple, but the town holds everything together. In It's In His Heart, widowed Ella Dennings and Cooper Wells are thrown together at a cabin while both are carrying fresh loss. It's In His Touch pairs tough lawyer Angelique Barbetta with Blake Holloway, a local man whose future is tangled up in the case she has come to town to win. Right away, the series establishes its favorite pattern, outsiders and locals colliding, secrets surfacing, and attraction growing in spite of very practical reasons to walk away.

The next books keep widening the circle. It's in His Smile follows Miranda Cruz as she tries to revive a Victorian inn and ends up reconnecting with Talmadge Oaks. It's In His Arms turns to Lorenda Lawson and Mitchell Lawson, her late husband’s twin, bringing more family history and more emotional weight into the series. Later installments, including It's In His Forever, It's in His Song, and It's In His Christmas Wish, give side characters their own turn at center stage and make the town feel even more lived in.

Red River itself matters as much as the couples do. Cabins, cafés, inns, bars, salons, council meetings, and holiday traditions keep pulling people together. This is not a series where the setting is just wallpaper. The town creates the pressure. It also creates the safety net. When characters fall apart, somebody notices. When gossip starts, it moves fast. When a business, event, or family home is in trouble, the whole place seems to lean in.

Small town, big feelings.

Alexander also mixes tones in a way that feels easy rather than forced. One chapter might deal with legal trouble, old scandal, or a hard family memory. The next might bring nosy neighbors, flirtation, or a town event that goes slightly sideways. That blend is a big part of the appeal. The books are romantic and sexy, but they are also interested in healing, belonging, and what it means to build a new life after the old one breaks.

If you like interconnected contemporary romances with recurring characters, a strong sense of place, and couples who have more to work through than a simple misunderstanding, this is a good place to start. Begin with It's In His Heart if you want the full town arc, then read forward and watch Red River open up one love story at a time.
