Rebecca Rode writes the kind of YA stories that move fast, ask big questions, and usually put a smart, determined girl in the middle of trouble. She is a Utah author whose work has appeared on the USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists, and she now lives in the Rocky Mountains with her family, two cats, and a house that sounds very full of books.

Her path to fiction was not especially direct. Rode studied child development and minored in English at Brigham Young University, then spent years writing journalism and features for magazines and news outlets. She has said she came to novel writing later than many authors, after college, after marriage, and after starting a family. Once she got a taste of writing professionally, the larger storytelling urge kicked in.

It turned out to be a pretty good fit.

Her breakout in fiction came with Numbers Game, a 2015 dystopian novel built around a sharp premise: what if one number could decide your place in society? Rode has said the idea came while she was thinking about credit scores and how much power people give them. In the book, Treena's future is wrecked by a single rating, and the story spirals into conspiracy, survival, and a tense bond with the guarded soldier Vance. Readers who like high-stakes worlds and romance threaded through danger tend to start there.

She kept building that world in Numbers Ignite and Numbers Raging, then later opened the door wider with Numbers Ascending and Numbers Collide. Those later books shift focus to Legacy Hawking and show how the same system can keep haunting a society even after people think they have changed it. Rode also wrote companion shorts like Chan's Story, Ruby's Story, and Richard's Story, which fill in side characters and history instead of treating the series like a closed box.

Then she headed for the stars.

Her Ember in Space trilogy begins with Flicker, where a young future-teller is taken by an empire that wants to turn her gift into a weapon. The books mix space adventure, rebellion, and slow-burn romance, but they also stay interested in power, class, and the cost of being useful to people who do not see you as fully human. That same streak shows up in Tides of Mutiny, her fantasy about a girl sailor forced to hide in a kingdom that kills women at sea.

Across her fiction, certain things keep coming back. Young women under pressure. Broken systems that call themselves orderly. Love stories that have to earn their place in the middle of danger. Even when the setting shifts from dystopian cities to spaceships to pirate waters, Rode keeps circling the same human problem: how do you hold on to yourself when the world keeps trying to label, rank, or use you?

She has also written nonfiction. Her book How to Have Peace When You're Falling to Pieces is aimed at mothers who feel overextended and worn thin, which makes sense given her background in child development and family life. Beyond the books, she has taught writing, marketing, and craft workshops at conferences, and her journalism background still shows in the way she notices how real systems and real pressures shape ordinary lives.

In 2024, some of her work was included in the Lunar Codex project, which sent creative archives on a mission headed toward the moon. It is a very Rebecca Rode detail, a writer grounded in family life and everyday questions, but also drawn to large horizons and big what-if ideas.
