Author bio
Rebecca Kertz is originally from northern New Jersey, but much of her writing life has grown out of rural Delaware, where she moved as a young newlywed. Living there put her close to Amish communities and close, too, to the everyday details that would later shape her fiction.
That part came almost by accident.
After her son was born, her husband took a job with a company that built hog houses and pole barns, working alongside an Amish crew. Kertz has said she would drop him off, wait with her little boy, watch the foreman's children play, and chat with the foreman's wife. She swapped recipes, listened, and paid attention. Those ordinary afternoons gave her something more useful than a pile of research notes. They gave her a feel for how work, family, privacy, and faith fit together in Amish life.
She has also talked about what drew her in. She likes the Amish sense of community and the way faith is folded into everyday routines. At the same time, she is careful about privacy and has said she tries to respect the boundaries Amish families keep. That balance, interest without intrusion, helps explain the tone of her books. They are warm, observant, and rooted in daily life.
She was a Harlequin reader first.
Her debut novel, Noah's Sweetheart, arrived in 2013 and introduced the Lancaster County Weddings books, set in the Amish community of Happiness, Pennsylvania. From there came Jedidiah's Bride, A Wife for Jacob, Elijah and the Widow, and Loving Isaac. Those early novels show what Kertz does well: courtship stories built around work, family expectations, old hurts, and the slow work of trust.
The later Women of Lancaster County books lean even more into family ties. A Secret Amish Love, Her Amish Christmas Sweetheart, Her Forgiving Amish Heart, Her Amish Christmas Gift, His Suitable Amish Wife, and Finding Her Amish Love all circle questions of belonging, forgiveness, and second chances. Her newer romances, including Loving Her Amish Neighbor, In Love with the Amish Nanny, His Forgotten Amish Love, The Widow's Hidden Past, and A Convenient Christmas Wife, keep returning to widows, grieving families, hidden pasts, and people trying to build a safe future after loss.
Across the books, you can see the patterns she likes most. A heroine may be carrying grief or a secret. A hero may need to prove he is steady, kind, or ready for commitment. The setting matters, too: farms, workshops, Sunday services, and close Pennsylvania communities where news travels fast and small gestures count. Kertz still lives in Delaware with her husband, feels lucky to have family nearby, and enjoys reading, arts and crafts, and visits to Lancaster County. It is a quiet writing life, which feels like a good match for the kinds of books she writes.
