When a student is murdered in a scene lifted from a crime novel, Detective Rebecca Angell and partner Jake Sullivan trace the killing back to author Amy Gallaty. As more deaths echo her plots, they must uncover the secrets in Amy’s past before the killer strikes again.
Series background & context
The Rebecca Angell books follow a young Norfolk police officer as she is thrown into cases that would challenge even the most seasoned detective. Set mainly in the 1990s, the series blends the pace of a serial-killer thriller with the grounded detail of a police procedural.
In M for Murder, Rebecca is still a rookie when she joins the investigation into a body found with the letter J carved into the victim’s neck. Eight years earlier a lecturer dubbed the Alphabet Killer, Rodney Boone, murdered eight students and marked them from A to H before apparently dying in a fire. The new killing forces the team to ask whether they are dealing with a copycat, or whether Boone somehow survived and is ready to finish the alphabet.
A big part of the tension in the first book comes from watching Rebecca prove herself. She is bright and determined but untested, working alongside more experienced officers who do not always welcome her instincts or her questions. The case drags her into university campuses, sewers and the private lives of victims and suspects, while the unseen killer always seems one step ahead.
D for Dead finds Rebecca more established and teamed up with detective Jake Sullivan. This time the murders are staged to mirror scenes from crime novels, pulling the police toward mystery author Amy Gallaty. Amy is already dealing with a stalker and her own troubled history, so Rebecca has to decide whether she is a manipulative suspect, a potential victim, or both as the body count rises.
Across the two books, Rebecca’s personal life is threaded carefully through the investigations. Her empathy for victims and witnesses is one of her strengths, but it also leaves scars, and there is a constant pull between staying within the rules and following her gut. Relationships with colleagues, including visiting federal agents, bring moments of warmth and friction that balance the darker plotlines.
The tone of the series is dark and tense rather than overly gory. Expect creeping dread, twisting investigations and cliffhanger chapter endings, all anchored in recognisable streets and workplaces. Although each novel tells a self-contained story, the emotional fallout from M for Murder carries into D for Dead, so it is best to read them in order to watch Rebecca Angell grow from promising rookie into a formidable detective.
