The Ankeny chapter of the Royal Bastards MC is where Kristine Allen goes darker. This series still runs on loyalty, attraction, and found family, but the club itself is harsher and the world around it feels meaner. These are 1 percenters, and the books do not pretend otherwise. The code matters, the work is ugly, and most of the men here are used to solving problems in ways polite society would rather not examine too closely.

Start with Voodoo, which introduces a chapter where dirty work is part of the daily job description. From there Angel keeps the pressure on with a hero who handles disposal and cleanup for the club, while A Very Venom Christmas proves that even a holiday story in this world is going to come with retaliation, pregnancy, and danger instead of cozy lights and easy cheer. Chains pushes the chapter into a fight against a sinister organization. Haunting Ghost steps back into an old tragedy and a first love that never really died. Charming Phoenix adds a road-runner survival feel, with the hero forced to protect a woman whose life is blowing apart.

Later books such as Sabre and Facet open the door to a much more paranormal side of Allen's storytelling. Sabre brings in a hero with a past that stretches far beyond ordinary biker romance, while Facet folds hidden identity and dark secrets into the club's already unstable world. The shift works because the series has always had a slightly heightened feel anyway. Once you accept that this chapter keeps bigger, stranger secrets than most, the supernatural turns feel like an expansion instead of a detour.

What ties all the books together is the sense that everyone in this chapter is carrying something. It might be grief, revenge, prison time, family blood, or an actual supernatural burden. Whatever the source, the characters are rarely starting from a clean slate. That makes the love stories feel earned. Nobody glides into happiness here.

The Ankeny series is a good fit if you like biker romance with real bite. There is violence, obsession, loyalty, club politics, and a strong undercurrent of danger in nearly every book. Read it in order if you can, beginning with Voodoo. The chapter history builds, the relationships echo forward, and the later surprises hit harder once you know how dark this road already is.
