Author bio
Rachel Aaron grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, in a house full of books. Reading came first, then the urge to make worlds of her own.
She has said she wanted to be both an author and a super villain, and writing turned out to be the more practical career.
After a childhood spent reading widely, she studied English literature at the University of Georgia. Her debut novel, The Spirit Thief, arrived in 2010 and introduced readers to Eli Monpress, a charming wizard thief in a world where every object has a spirit and magic depends on persuasion rather than brute force.
That first series set the pattern for a lot of what Aaron does best. Her books move fast, trust readers to keep up, and usually follow underdogs who survive with nerve, humor, and stubborn kindness as much as raw power.
She likes systems, but she likes people more.
That balance helps explain the appeal of books like Nice Dragons Finish Last, where the least ruthless dragon in a deadly family gets thrown into a city that hates dragons, and Minimum Wage Magic, which turns magical gig work into a funny, scrappy urban fantasy with real emotional stakes. It is there in Fortune's Pawn as well, written under her science fiction pen name Rachel Bach, where powered armor, shipboard secrets, and a very ambitious mercenary drive a sharp, high-speed space opera.
Aaron has also shown a willingness to jump between subgenres without losing her voice. She and Travis Bach co-wrote Forever Fantasy Online, a game world fantasy about siblings trapped in a virtual reality adventure that suddenly becomes real. Later, in The Last Stand of Mary Good Crow, she headed into weird West territory, mixing frontier history, crystal magic, and the harsh pressures of 1877 Montana.
Outside fiction, many writers know her from 2k to 10k, her practical book about increasing daily word count without giving up quality. It grew out of her own writing process and became a big part of her public identity. Aaron's interest in storytelling has never been limited to plot and characters, she is also deeply interested in how writing works as a day-to-day job.
Across fantasy, science fiction, LitRPG, and weird West adventure, her books keep circling back to found family, layered magic, high stakes, and people who are in over their heads but keep going anyway. She now lives in the mountains of Colorado with her husband, son, and an overflowing library, and when she is not writing, she has said she loves reading, video games, anime, manga, Minecraft, and other gloriously nerdy things.
