Author bio
Rachael Thomas grew up in the Midlands, but Wales became home. More than twenty years ago she moved there, married into a farming family, and found herself learning Welsh while her children were still small. That mix of change, routine, and starting over seems to echo through a lot of her romances.
Home, in her books, is often something people have to choose again.
She has said she wanted to write from childhood, and she still remembers the thrill of a short story being held up as an example when she was about nine. Later, as a teenager, she discovered Mills and Boon and found the kind of storytelling she loved most, emotional, romantic, and full of longing.
For years, writing sat alongside everyday life rather than replacing it. When her own children were in school, she decided to take the dream seriously, joined a local writing group that met on Monday afternoons, and started turning that long-held wish into a working habit. She also noticed that almost every short story she wrote leaned toward romance, so a full novel began to feel like the natural next step.
Thomas did not rush that learning stage. She took courses, including one with Kate Walker, joined the RNA New Writers' Scheme, and entered competitions through Romance Writers of Australia. It was steady, practical work, the kind of apprenticeship that usually happens out of sight, but it clearly mattered.
Then came the break.
In 2013 she entered Harlequin's So You Think You Can Write contest. Her manuscript made the Top Ten, and that story became her debut novel, A Deal Before the Altar. It is an apt starting point for her career, because it already shows what readers return to in her work: proud heroines, guarded heroes, urgent bargains, and feelings that refuse to stay neat or manageable.
Books like Claimed by the Sheikh, Craving Her Enemy's Touch, The Sheikh's Last Mistress, and A Ring to Claim His Legacy lean into the lush, high-pressure side of category romance. She likes desert kingdoms, Greek islands, Italian glamour, billionaires with too much control, and heroines with enough backbone to challenge them. Even when the setup is dramatic, marriage bargains, surprise pregnancies, family duty, the emotional question is usually simple. Can these two people trust each other enough to stop performing and tell the truth?
That is also why books such as Valdez's Bartered Bride, Martinez's Pregnant Wife, and Married for the Italian's Heir work so well for her readers. The situations are big, but the hook is often a very human vulnerability hiding underneath the shine. A woman trying to protect her dignity. A man shaped by family history. Two people pulled together by necessity, then forced to figure out whether desire can become something steadier. More recently, Starlight and Second Chances shows another side of her writing, moving to a coastal community inspired by Cardigan Bay while keeping the second chances, family ties, and emotional pull that run through much of her work.
She still lives on a farm in Wales and has spoken about loving to explore, which fits an author whose stories travel so widely. Whether she is writing about Sicily, Santorini, a desert kingdom, or a small bay closer to home, her fiction keeps returning to the same promise: strong feeling, hard-earned trust, and a happy ending that feels fully won.
