Ra the Mighty: Cat Detective Books in Order

Ra the Mighty: Cat Detective is a middle grade mystery series set in ancient Egypt, but its hook is wonderfully simple: the detective is Pharaoh's pampered cat. Each book has its own case, but the friendship among the three detectives grows from one story to the next.

The setting matters almost as much as the mysteries. These books are full of palace corridors, busy kitchens, riverboats, tombs, work villages, and the everyday rules of life around Pharaoh's court. The ancient world is not just backdrop here. It shapes the clues, the dangers, and even the way the characters see themselves. Kids get a real sense of how animals, servants, officials, and royal family members all fit into the same larger world.

Greenfield keeps the tone light and funny without making the problems feel fake. Innocent people can be blamed. Valuable things can vanish. Children can disappear. Ra may be theatrical and vain, but he is also loyal, and Khepri's steady decency keeps the stories grounded. Miu brings speed, curiosity, and just enough impatience to stop the others from getting too comfortable. Together they make a detective team that is odd, funny, and surprisingly dependable.

If you like historical mysteries that move fast, this series is an easy pick. The cases are self-contained, so each book can stand on its own, but reading them in order lets you watch Ra slowly become the kind of hero he would never admit he wants to be. Expect clues, red herrings, chases, squabbling, and a lot of ancient Egyptian detail folded neatly into the fun.
