Eva

Series background & context
The Queen of Spades books center on Eva Lucia Santella, a woman forged in the brutal math of organized crime. Eva comes out of Sicily with a reputation, a long memory, and a skill set that makes most people underestimate her exactly once. By the time the series opens, she’s no longer interested in building an empire. She’s interested in taking predators off the board.
Eva’s past is part of the hook. She learned power in a world where violence is currency and loyalty is a trap. When betrayals stack up and survival demands reinvention, she lands in the United States and starts moving through Los Angeles with a new purpose. She has money and connections, but she also has a code, and it’s sharper than a knife.
Eva doesn’t believe in second chances for monsters.
That code drives the series’ tension. Eva hunts the people who buy, sell, and break others, and she does it from the inside of their world: private rooms, expensive parties, guarded compounds, and the kind of institutions that look clean from the outside. Each book gives her a new target and a new set of compromises. The question isn’t whether she can win a fight. It’s what she’s willing to burn to make sure the right person pays.
In Eva’s world, trust is a liability.
Family ties and mentorship complicate things. Eva is connected to the wider Santella world, which includes younger vigilantes and people who live on the edge of her influence. She’s also tied to the training pipeline that produces killers, including the teenage assassin Rose in the Vigilante Crime books. The series plays with that push and pull, protection versus control, love versus leverage, and what it means to create a weapon and then try to keep it safe.
The tone is high-stakes and dark, but it stays grounded in Eva’s point of view. She’s not chasing redemption in a neat arc. She’s deciding, again and again, how to live with what she’s done and what she still has to do, while staying ahead of enemies who would love to collect on old debts. Settings move between the shine of Southern California and the lingering gravity of Sicily, with later stories pulling in bigger political and criminal machines.
If you want to read in order, Blood Feud and Eva work as quick entry points before the main series begins. From there, Queen of Spades kicks off the core run, followed by the card-themed missions that build Eva’s world piece by piece.
