The third novel, Mama Sadie, puts retired grocer Sadie Baker at the center of a fight over a planned hazardous-waste incinerator. Sadie fears for her grandchildren and the town's future, but the proposal divides neighbors and even her own adult sons. The story brings local government, economic pressure, environmental risk, and family tension together without leaving behind the series' sense of humor.
