First Test Graphic Novel

by Tamora Pierce

2024

Adapted from the novel *First Test*, this graphic novel follows Keladry of Mindelan as the first girl to openly pursue knighthood in Tortall. Panels capture brutal training, schoolyard politics, and Kel's steady resolve as she faces a one year trial no boy has endured.

Series background & context

The Protector of the Small graphic novels bring Keladry of Mindelan's story into a visual format, opening Tortall to readers who respond best to comics. They adapt First Test and the rest of Kel's journey as she becomes the first girl to openly train for knighthood in generations.

In this version of the tale, the training yards, practice tilting fields, and crowded dining halls of the royal palace are all laid out in panels. You see the size difference between Kel and the older boys who try to intimidate her, the bruises from extra drills ordered by Lord Wyldon, and the wary glances of nobles who are not sure what to make of a girl in armor.

Kel's quiet stubbornness translates well to the page. She is not flashy or magically gifted, but the art can linger on small gestures, the way she shields younger pages from bullies or tends to her horse and sparrows after a long day's work. Hazing, unfair tests, and the gradual shift as some classmates move from mockery to respect are all present, just delivered through expressions and body language as much as dialog.

For readers already familiar with the prose novels, the graphic adaptations offer a new way to revisit favorite scenes and pick up details that might have been only a line or two in the text. For new readers, they can serve as an introduction to Tortall that does not require tackling a full length novel right away.

Because the story is faithful to the spirit of the originals, the same themes come through, standing up to bullies, questioning unfair rules, and learning that protecting the small can be as heroic as winning a battlefield victory. The graphic novels fit neatly alongside both the Protector of the Small books and the other Tortall comics, giving visual readers their own doorway into Kel's part of the timeline.
