Series background & context
The Protector is Megan Hart in near-future mode, blending science fiction romance with suspense and a long, three-book relationship arc. This is not a series where each installment swaps in a fresh couple. The same two people, Nina Bronson and Ewan Donahue, stay at the center the whole way through, and that gives the trilogy a tighter, more escalating feel.
Nina is the hook.
She is an enhanced former soldier working as an elite bodyguard in a world that both depends on and fears people like her. Ewan is a billionaire whose connection to the enhancement technology makes him both powerful and deeply suspect in Ninaβs eyes. Dangerous Promise throws them together when Nina is hired to protect him, and the attraction works precisely because trust does not come easily. They want each other before they know what to do with the moral and personal mess between them.
Wicked Attraction and Forbidden Stranger keep pressing on that weak spot. The outside danger remains important, threats, targeting, secrets, missing pieces of memory, but the books are just as interested in whether Nina and Ewan can build anything solid after betrayal. Hart uses the futuristic setup for action and tension, but she never lets the emotional stakes disappear behind the tech.
The tone is faster and more plot-driven than some of her purely contemporary work. There are chases, attacks, political implications, and a world shaped by enhancement, surveillance, and class divides. At the same time, it still feels recognizably Megan Hart. Nina and Ewan spend a lot of time trying to figure out what love can possibly look like when their whole relationship began inside an ethical disaster.
If you want Hart with a stronger suspense engine and a clear, same-couple trilogy structure, this is a good place to go. Start at the beginning and keep moving, because the books are built to carry one long story straight through to the end.
