Series background & context
The Protector series, also known as the Aphrodite novels, mixes superhero-flavored fantasy with romantic comedy. It kicks off with Aphrodite’s Kiss, where assistant librarian Zoe Smith discovers she’s not quite human and not quite ready for the responsibilities that come with that.
Zoe is a Halfling, and her powers come with tests, rules, and higher stakes than her normal life can handle. The mythology is playful, and the books are as interested in awkward moments and banter as they are in saving the day.
Think capes and chemistry.
George Bailey Taylor, the man who gets pulled into Zoe’s orbit, brings a grounded, very human counterpoint to her new world. Their relationship grows as Zoe learns what she can do, and what she’s willing to risk.
Each book pushes Zoe deeper into the supernatural side of things, adding new challenges without burying you in heavy lore. You can expect action beats, romantic tension, and a heroine who keeps surprising herself.
Start with Aphrodite’s Kiss and read forward. The series is best for readers who like light fantasy with a strong romantic through-line and a heroine who’s figuring it out on the fly.
