Prospero's War is set in Babylon, Ohio, a rust-belt city where magic is not some sparkling extra, it is a criminal economy. At the center is Kate Prospero, a cop who knows that world from the inside because she grew up in the Cauldron, the city's magical slum, before joining the police.

That history gives the series its bite. Kate's knowledge of dirty magic helps her land a place with the Magical Enforcement Agency, but every case pulls her back toward old loyalties, old mistakes, and people she would rather forget. One of the smartest things about the books is that the investigations are never only professional. A suspect may be tied to family, an old lover, a coven war, or Kate's own complicated relationship with magic.

The ongoing setup mixes police procedural structure with urban fantasy pressure. One book revolves around a dangerous new magical blend on the street. Another uses a rare Blue Moon to throw the whole city off balance while a rogue wizard steals volatile potions. Later entries dig into cartel violence, coven infighting, lab explosions, and murder scenes that point to larger conspiracies. The cases change, but the city never stops feeling tense.

Babylon matters as much as any character.

Wells uses the setting well. Babylon feels worn down, divided, and easy to corrupt, which makes Kate's work feel uphill from the start. The series also keeps an eye on the people around her, especially her younger brother, her partners, and the coworkers who know just enough about her past to worry. Those connections keep the books grounded even when the magic gets wild, and they give the larger arc an emotional center.

If Sabina Kane is the sharper, sassier branch of Wells' urban fantasy, Prospero's War is the grittier one. The tone is fast and dark, with shootouts, messy ethics, and just enough hope to keep Kate pushing forward. These books are best read in order, starting with Dirty Magic, because Kate's past, her recovery, and her relationships all deepen from case to case.
