Series background & context

The Promises Trilogy moves Michele Sinclair out of medieval Scotland and into Regency England, but she keeps the same interest in bold heroines, loyal friendships, and romance tangled up with trouble. Instead of clan keeps and border raids, the backdrop is London society, country houses, drawing rooms, and the constant pressure to marry well. The shift in setting changes the clothes and the rules, not the appetite for adventure.

That promise causes trouble.

At the center are three close friends, often called the Daring Three, who made a youthful vow not to marry unless love and freedom came with it. That early pact gives the series its shape. These are women who have been told what a proper lady should do, and who are not especially interested in being proper if it means giving up themselves. Sinclair has fun with that tension. Her heroines notice too much, ask too many questions, and make plans that seem clever right up until they become dangerous.

In A Woman Made for Pleasure, Lady Millie Aldon is bored by the marriage market and drawn instead to excitement, observation, and the mystery surrounding Chase Wentworth's return. The book mixes flirting with investigation, so the romance grows alongside a search for hidden motives and a traitor. In A Woman Made For Sin, Lady Aimee Wentworth goes after the man she has wanted for years, the sailor Reece Hamilton, and the story shifts onto the water. There the series keeps its taste for secrecy, but adds shipboard chaos, class tension, and a more openly stormy love story.

What ties these books together is not just friendship, though that matters a lot. It is the sense that love has to be chosen freely. The men may be marquesses, sailors, or well connected protectors, but they still have to learn that desire is not enough, and that these women will not quietly step into a life someone else designed for them. Sinclair leans more openly into mystery here than in many of her Highland books. There are balls and gossip, but also covert watching, mistaken identity, abrupt travel, and people with hidden agendas.

These are Regency romances that like to leave the ballroom.

If you are coming to this series after the McTiernay books, expect a lighter social setting but not a smaller one. The emotional stakes are still high, and the stories still move. Read them in order for the strongest sense of the friendships, the carryover threads, and the world Sinclair is building around these women. The result is a set of romances that blend wit, risk, and loyalty with just enough intrigue to keep the satin sleeves from feeling too tidy.
