Series background & context

Promise Falls is Barclay’s fictional upstate New York town, a place that looks like a typical former mill community but hides enough secrets, grudges, and bad decisions to fuel an entire shelf of thrillers.

Early novels such as Too Close to Home, Never Look Away, The Accident, Trust Your Eyes, and A Tap on the Window use Promise Falls as a backdrop. A quiet subdivision shattered by the murder of the family next door, a wife who disappears from a local amusement park, a fatal car crash that exposes a web of illegal schemes, and a map-obsessed recluse who spots a possible murder online all unfold in and around the same streets and institutions.

At the center of many of these stories stands Detective Barry Duckworth, a dogged local cop with a bad diet and a strong sense of duty, and later private investigator Cal Weaver, who has his own complicated history with the town. Together they form the spine of the Promise Falls trilogy: Broken Promise, Far From True, and The Twenty-Three.

In Broken Promise, bankrupt reporter David Harwood returns home with his young son and quickly becomes tangled in a horrific mystery involving his cousin Marla, a baby that is not hers, and a brutal killing on the other side of town. The book also introduces a series of unsettling incidents that hint at a larger pattern of malice: animal killings, creepy messages, and the recurring number 23.

Far From True follows a deadly accident at a drive-in theater and a break-in that exposes a secret basement room used for coercion and voyeurism. As Cal and Barry dig, they discover links between seemingly unrelated deaths and the unresolved crimes hanging over the town. The Twenty-Three brings everything to a head when a mass poisoning through the water supply sends hundreds to the hospital and dozens to the morgue, even as a serial killer targets women and the meaning of the number 23 finally comes into focus.

Parting Shot serves as a coda, focusing on a young man whose drunk-driving crash killed a local girl and who now faces vicious online and real-world threats. Cal Weaver’s investigation pulls in familiar faces and shows how the town’s appetite for payback can be as dangerous as any single villain.

What ties the Promise Falls books together is not a single hero but the sense of a whole community under strain. Old factories have closed, political rivalries simmer, and people are tempted into shortcuts that turn deadly. Readers can start with any of the standalones or dive straight into the trilogy, then enjoy the way characters and consequences echo from one book to the next.
