Clouded Vision

by Linwood Barclay

2010

Con artist Keisha Ceylon poses as a psychic, visiting families of missing people with invented visions in exchange for cash. Her latest target, a husband whose wife has disappeared, reacts so strongly to her story that Keisha realizes she has stumbled dangerously close to the truth.

Series background & context

The Keisha Ceylon books follow a woman who makes a living pretending to talk to the dead and missing, then discovers that some visions are far more dangerous than she ever planned.

Keisha presents herself as a psychic, turning up on doorsteps after a disappearance hits the news and offering desperate families glimpses of hope for a fee. In reality she is a sharp observer and a skilled con artist, piecing together details from television reports and body language. Her business model is simple: tell people what they want to hear, collect the money, move on before anything can be disproved.

In the novella Clouded Vision, we see this scheme in miniature. Keisha targets a man whose wife has vanished, confident she can invent a plausible story that will earn a payoff. The problem is that her improvised “vision” lines up a little too closely with what really happened. Instead of a quick score, she finds herself entangled with people who have already killed once and are not inclined to leave loose ends.

The full-length novel Never Saw It Coming expands Keisha’s world. Once again she moves in on a grieving husband, Wendell Garfield, believing she has spotted another easy mark on the evening news. This time the lies snowball. Every attempt to extract herself drags her deeper into a mix of blackmail, buried secrets, and escalating violence. What begins as a petty scam spirals into a fight for survival that tests both her nerve and her limited conscience.

Across these stories, Barclay walks a fine line with Keisha. She is cynical, manipulative, and very willing to cash in on other people’s pain, yet she is also resourceful and oddly sympathetic once she realizes how far out of her depth she has gone. The books are crime novels with a darkly comic edge, powered less by police procedure than by bad decisions, shifting loyalties, and the way one small lie can open the door to much uglier truths.

Readers who enjoy morally gray protagonists and tight, small-scale thrillers will find the Keisha Ceylon stories a quick but satisfying corner of Barclay’s universe.
