In Search of the Lost World

by Greig Beck

2017

While sorting his late father’s papers, Ben Cartwright finds letters between his great great grandfather and Arthur Conan Doyle describing a hidden plateau in the Amazon. Chasing the clues with a small team, Ben enters a jungle world where dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures still thrive.

Series background & context

The Primordia books are Becks tribute to classic lost world tales, updated with modern science and a strong streak of survival horror. Instead of stumbling blindly into dinosaurs, his characters follow a trail of letters, legends and old notebooks that suggest someone really did find such a place a century ago.

In In Search of the Lost World former soldier Ben Cartwright returns home to deal with his fathers estate and uncovers correspondence between his great great grandfather and Arthur Conan Doyle. The letters hint that a vanished 1908 Amazon expedition inspired the famous lost world story and that a notebook still exists which maps a hidden plateau where prehistoric life endured untouched.

Ben teams up with childhood friend Emma and a small band of specialists to follow the clues into the Venezuelan jungle. Once they slip through the rare doorway into Primordia they discover an ecosystem overflowing with creatures from different eras, along with evidence that earlier expeditions may not all have perished.

Return to the Lost World takes place years later. The gateway opens again on its strange cycle, and Emma has spent the intervening decade preparing to go back and look for Ben, who became trapped on the wrong side. The second journey adds new perspectives on the plateau, diving under primeval oceans and pushing deeper into territory where humanity was never meant to walk.

In Lost World - ReEvolution the consequences of their time in Primordia start to ripple through the present. Odd creatures begin appearing on modern Earth, some extinct, some monstrously new, and only the surviving members of the original team understand why. A friend who stayed behind in the deep past is changing events in ways that threaten to erase humanitys future, forcing the others to make one more desperate trip through time.

Taken together, the trilogy moves from pure exploration fantasy to questions about evolution, responsibility and how even small actions in the distant past can transform everything that follows. Dinosaurs and other giants deliver the spectacle, but the emotional core stays with a group of ordinary people trying to repair damage they never intended to cause.
