Emily, the other assistant, understands the magazine's culture differently, adding tension to their working life. Revenge Wears Prada returns to Andy after her departure from Runway. She and Emily have joined forces to create The Plunge, a high-end bridal magazine. The former workplace rivals now share a business, giving their relationship a new shape. Building something of their own does not mean that Miranda's influence has disappeared, however. The sequel places Andy's efforts to establish a different professional life beside the continuing reach of the world she thought she had left behind. It also shifts the focus from surviving as an employee to protecting choices made as an adult with greater responsibility.

When Life Gives You Lululemons moves the spotlight to Emily, who works as an image consultant in Hollywood. Losing clients makes her eager for an opportunity, and former supermodel Karolina Hartwell's public disgrace seems to offer one. Emily goes to Greenwich, Connecticut, where she works with Karolina and their friend Miriam, a former attorney now raising a family. Repairing a reputation requires the women to negotiate local social politics as well as public attention. The setting changes, but the importance of presentation and the pressures behind an enviable life remain familiar.

The books combine social comedy with stories about work, friendship and competing definitions of success. Their humour depends on demanding people and systems that encourage everyone to maintain an attractive surface. Andy and Emily's experiences give that world a personal focus, while their changing roles create different kinds of conflict. Reading The Devil Wears Prada first establishes Runway and Miranda before Revenge Wears Prada follows the later partnership. When Life Gives You Lululemons then offers Emily's own branch of the story, with a new group of women confronting the distance between public image and private experience.
