Even when the plots get bigger, Hopkins keeps the emotional center close to Sadie and the people around her.

There is also a strong regional feel here. Possum Gap is not just a backdrop with a spooky name. The series leans into Appalachian terrain, stubborn local loyalties, and the sense that the mountains remember things people would rather forget. Some books flirt with folklore and the uncanny, but the stories stay grounded in human choices, damaged families, and the cost of survival.
