Poor Man's Fight starts with a simple problem and lets it turn huge. Tanner Malone is smart, broke, and headed nowhere after school falls apart and debt wipes out his university plans. With homelessness staring him down, he enlists in Archangel's tiny navy because he does not have many good options left. That working-class pressure is built into the series from page one.

The setting is a future where money, military power, and politics are tangled together in ugly ways. Archangel sits inside a larger human order called the Union of Humanity, while the biggest corporations in human space squeeze whole systems for profit. Pirates stalk the lanes, civil war looms, and later books widen the picture further with alien powers, diplomacy, and threats that reach well beyond one battlefield. Even at its biggest, though, the series stays close to the people who have to do the dangerous work.

The first books follow him through brutal training, shipboard tension, and open conflict in Poor Man's Fight and Rich Man's War. Dead Man's Debt pushes him into espionage, diplomacy, and the public eye, while No Medals for Secrets shifts some of the focus to Corporal Alicia Wong and the covert side of the war. From there the series keeps expanding without losing Tanner. Last Man Out drops him into university life and an archaeological disaster, No Man's Land brings him back up against a major alien threat, and Life After Hell uses campus life and refugees to show that trouble can find Tanner even when he is trying very hard to live like a normal student.

These books are full of action, but the real hook is the mix of pressure and personality. Tanner complains, worries, improvises, and gets dragged forward anyway. Alicia Wong and the wider cast bring their own strengths, scars, humor, and loyalties, so the series never feels like one man solving everything alone. Friendships, unit culture, trauma, recovery, and bureaucracy all matter here.

These are war stories, but they are not glory stories.

If you like military science fiction with strong momentum, clear stakes, and a hero who would rather be anywhere else, this series is easy to fall into. The space battles and covert missions are fun, but the books keep one eye on debt, class, politics, and the cost of survival. That gives Poor Man's Fight a grounded feel, even when the setting gets larger, stranger, and much more dangerous.
