In Her Sights
by Karen Witemeyer
2023
Sharpshooter’s daughter Tessa James has long loved brooding hunter Jackson Spivey, who wants nothing to do with romance. After lessons with Annie Oakley and the loan of a legendary pink-handled pistol, Tessa’s clumsy attempts to impress him draw both of them into real danger and a courtship neither expected.
Series background & context
Pink Pistol Sisterhood is a collaborative series built around a single, unforgettable object, a pink-handled pistol said to carry a promise of true love for the woman who carries it. The legend traces the gun back to sharpshooting icon Annie Oakley, who in these stories passes it along to a young student with instructions to keep it moving from one hopeful heart to the next.
Karen Witemeyer launches the series with In Her Sights, set in small-town Texas. Jackson Spivey lives on the outskirts of respectability, a crack shot and hunter whose usefulness to the local hotel keeps him employed but whose father’s reputation keeps mothers warning their daughters away. Burned by rejection and gossip, Jackson has decided he is better off alone, trusting only his rifles and his quiet faith.
Tessa James does not agree. She has been quietly in love with Jackson for years, but every attempt to befriend him seems to drive him farther into his shell. When she learns that Annie Oakley will be performing nearby, Tessa seizes the chance to take shooting lessons from the famous markswoman, hoping that sharing Jackson’s interest in firearms might finally get his attention.
There is one small problem, she is terrible with a gun. Her aim improves dramatically only after Annie loans her a custom-made pistol with pink pearl grips and shares the lore attached to it. Supposedly, if a woman wraps her hand around that delicate handle and opens her heart, the weapon will somehow steer her toward the man forged to match her. Tessa is not sure whether to believe such tales, but she is willing to risk a little superstition if it might nudge Jackson her way.
As Tessa practices, things do begin to change, though not always in the straightforward romantic way she expects. The pistol draws out long-buried fears in Jackson, brings danger onto the scene when real bullets start flying, and ultimately forces both of them to confront what they truly want. The story balances lighthearted moments, such as Tessa’s comic early attempts at marksmanship, with more serious questions about identity, legacy, and the courage it takes to be vulnerable.
Because the Pink Pistol Sisterhood is multi-author, Witemeyer’s novella also plants seeds for books by others. The pistol moves on after her story ends, carrying the hint of Jackson and Tessa’s happiness with it into new eras and new towns. Readers who enjoy the idea of a single enchanted object weaving through different lives will appreciate how In Her Sights sets the tone, combining Witemeyer’s trademark humor and tender romance with a touch of whimsy that suits a legendary "courtship pistol" perfectly.
