PI Choo-Choo Buschitski Books in Order

Felix “Choo-Choo” Buschitski is Kirk Alex's low-rent answer to the classic private eye. He is not polished, not noble, and not particularly patient. The books themselves say as much: he is not Marlowe, not Mike Hammer, not Sam Spade. He is Buschitski, and he gets the job done however he can. That attitude shapes the whole series, which includes short, nasty, darkly funny pieces like Bone, Angel--the Crazy Woman, The Case of the Vengeful Vixen, My Kind of Client, and The Hard Bitch.

He complains a lot.

That is part of the fun.

The setting is a grubby, street-level Los Angeles full of West Hollywood diners, cheap offices, bad apartments, hookers, pimps, johns, hustlers, and women who look like trouble because they usually are trouble. In Bone, a man in a purple suit asks Buschitski to find his missing sister and gives him almost nothing to go on. In Angel--the Crazy Woman, another damaged woman pulls him into fresh chaos. The Case of the Vengeful Vixen flips the pressure the other way, with a former client coming back for payback. These stories are brief, but they move with the same hard, sour rhythm.

What ties the series together is Buschitski's voice. He is horny, irritated, suspicious, broke, and forever trying to keep some control over situations that are already slipping sideways. Alex uses him partly as a noir hero and partly as a parody of one. The books know the genre's old habits, the dangerous dames, the seedy streets, the cynical wisecracks, and they lean into them while also making them nastier, stranger, and more ridiculous.

Because the entries are short, the series works best as a run of snapshots rather than one grand arc. You come here for tone, voice, and atmosphere. Each case gives you another angle on Buschitski and another tour through a city where cheap desire and bad judgment are always about to collide.

If you like your detective fiction grubby, comic, and a little disreputable, Choo-Choo is a good stop. These are noir misadventures, and the word misadventures matters.
