Series background & context

The Philadelphia and Atlanta books form one of Karen Rose's most tightly connected arcs, following Special Agent Daniel Vartanian, his family and the fallout from a horrifying series of crimes rooted in their small Georgia hometown. These stories move back and forth between big city investigations and the rural community that shaped the heroes and villains alike.

It begins in Philadelphia with Die for Me, when detective Vito Ciccotelli uncovers a snow covered field seeded with precisely dug graves, some filled, others waiting. Medieval expert Sophie Johannsen joins the case to help interpret the killer's obsession with historic torture methods. Daniel Vartanian operates in the background, part of a larger federal effort to understand who is orchestrating the murders and why they are staged like a macabre game.

Scream for Me shifts the focus squarely onto Daniel. A new series of killings in Georgia appears to mimic a thirteen year old murder tied to a cache of disturbing photographs that once belonged to his brother, Simon, a serial killer already dead. As Daniel digs into the old case he crosses paths with nurse Alex Fallon, whose missing stepsister may be the latest target and whose own past is entangled with one of the earliest victims.

In Kill for Me the scope widens again when prosecutor Susannah Vartanian and FBI agent Luke Papadopoulos pick up the trail of a trafficking ring that kidnaps teenage girls and sells them to the highest bidder. The investigation drags into the light the systemic abuses that were allowed to flourish in the Vartanians' hometown, forcing Susannah to confront memories she has suppressed for years.

More recently, the novella The White Picket Fence returns to Philadelphia, following sketch artist Tino Ciccotelli as he helps hunt a stalker who has attacked a beloved teacher and may now be targeting the woman who broke his heart. While the story stands alone, it deepens the sense that justice in this world is a long game, playing out in the lives of survivors years after an investigation closes.

Together these books are some of Rose's darkest, dealing openly with sexual violence, corruption and community complicity. At the same time they showcase what her stories do best, pairing traumatised but determined protagonists with equally driven partners and building a found family of cops, lawyers and civilians who refuse to look away from what was done. The Philadelphia and Atlanta arc rewards being read in order, giving a full picture of how one town's secrets can poison generations.
