The Perveen Mistry novels are historical mysteries set in Bombay during the early 1920s, when British rule shaped public life and Indian independence was becoming an urgent question. Perveen is a Parsi solicitor working at her father's law firm. She has legal training, a sharp mind, and more ambition than the world around her is always ready to accept.

As one of the city’s first women lawyers, Perveen has unusual access to women whose lives are hidden from male officials and advisers. That makes her useful to clients dealing with inheritance, marriage, guardianship, family property, and other problems that can turn dangerous when money and power are involved. It also puts her in a difficult position, because the legal system does not give women professionals equal standing.

Each book starts with a case that belongs to Perveen’s work. In The Widows of Malabar Hill, she is asked to help three secluded widows whose inheritance plans raise troubling questions. The Satapur Moonstone sends her into a remote princely state to advise on the future of a young maharaja. In The Bombay Prince, a student’s suspicious death unfolds amid unrest surrounding the Prince of Wales’s visit to Bombay.

Perveen has to be a lawyer, investigator, and diplomat all at once.

The series makes room for the people around her as well. Perveen’s parents, brother, sister-in-law, household staff, colleagues, and closest friend all affect the choices she can make. Her family is loving but protective, and her professional work often forces her to push against social rules that even well-meaning people take for granted.

Bombay is a major character in its own right. The books move through law offices, wealthy homes, cafés, schools, hospitals, palaces, film circles, and crowded streets. The city contains British officials, Parsis, Muslims, Hindus, Anglo-Indians, immigrants, laborers, students, and business families, all living with different degrees of safety and influence. Massey uses that breadth to show why a single crime can have consequences far beyond one household.

The tone is thoughtful but still built around a solid mystery. Perveen follows evidence, interviews witnesses, reads documents closely, and worries about protecting clients who cannot safely defend themselves. The cases also touch on class, religion, sexism, health, family loyalty, and the limits placed on women’s independence.
