Series background & context

The Percheron trilogy represents a distinct shift in scenery for Fiona McIntosh. Moving away from the temperate, forest-heavy landscapes common in Western fantasy, she transports readers to a scorching, sand-swept world reminiscent of the medieval Middle East. It is a setting defined by blistering heat, swirling dust, and rigid social hierarchies, where the city-states are walled against the elements and the desert beyond is filled with ancient, slumbering threats.

At the heart of the capital lies the palace, a place that appears luxurious on the surface but functions as a golden cage for everyone inside. The young Zar Boaz sits on the throne, yet his power is far from absolute. He is constantly surrounded by advisors who whisper in his ear, none more formidable than his own mother, the Valide Herezah. She is a master of palace intrigue, ruthlessly pulling strings from the shadows to ensure her son—and by extension, she herself—remains in absolute control of the realm.

Into this snake pit walks Lazar, a celebrated general known to his troops and enemies alike as the Spur.

Lazar is a man of honor in a city that often lacks it, but he unwittingly sets a catastrophe in motion when he encounters a peasant girl named Ana. Ana is remarkable not just for her stunning appearance, but for a spirit that refuses to be broken by her poverty. When Lazar brings her into the Zar’s harem, he believes he is securing a better future for her. Instead, he places her directly in the crosshairs of the Valide and triggers a chain of events that will shake the foundations of the leadership.

The human drama and harem politics would be enough to drive the story, but there is something much darker waking up beneath the sands. The world of Percheron is bound by a cyclical history involving rival deities: the benevolent goddess Lyana and the cruel, demonic god Maliz. This great cycle, known as the Galadea, is beginning to turn once again, signaling a time of chaos and judgment.

Demons and ancient forces are slowly clawing their way back into the mortal realm, feeding on the instability in the palace. Ana soon discovers that she is not merely a pawn in a game of human jealousy, but a central figure in this returning divine war. As the trilogy progresses through Odalisque, Emissary, and Goddess, the narrative expands from the claustrophobic tension of the seraglio to epic military campaigns across the open dunes.

It is a classic McIntosh setup: high stakes, emotional turmoil, and characters who must sacrifice everything to survive. The lines between friend and foe blur constantly, reminding us that in the heat of Percheron, trust is the most dangerous luxury of all.
