On an ordinary day he nearly runs over Isabel’s phone with his motorcycle and finds his orderly world quietly tilted by this candid, curious stranger who seems to be walking around with history in her pocket.

As Isabel and Malcolm explore the village together, they retrace moments from Olivia and Lyon’s past, comparing what the diary says to what modern Pennyroyal Green remembers. The contrast between centuries gives the story a reflective, slightly bittersweet tone. Old houses, churchyards, and that famous oak tree all look different when you are standing under them with someone who understands how much has been lost and how much has survived.
