Malcolm and Isabel

by Julie Anne Long

2018

Modern day Pennyroyal Green newcomer Isabel Redmond arrives from America with a family diary and a fragile new identity. Local doctor Malcolm Coburn has always belonged to the village, until Isabel’s questions and quick wit unsettle his careful life, and the echoes of a legendary love story draw them together.

Series background & context

Pennyroyal Today is a slim but meaningful bridge between Julie Anne Long’s beloved historical Pennyroyal Green novels and the modern world. Instead of ballrooms and carriage rides, the story follows smartphones, motorcycles, and coffee in takeout cups, while still orbiting the same Sussex village and the same dynastic families.

The novella Malcolm and Isabel picks up threads from the epilogue of The Legend of Lyon Redmond. Isabel Redmond is an American jewelry designer who grew up in foster homes and only recently discovered that she descends from the storied Redmond clan. She arrives in today’s Pennyroyal Green with a rented flat, a battered suitcase, and a diary written by her ancestor Olivia Eversea, whose love story with Lyon Redmond shaped the original series.

Malcolm Coburn, one of the town’s overworked GPs, has lived in Pennyroyal Green his entire life. He knows every lane, every family name, and every whispered version of the legends surrounding the Everseas and Redmonds. On an ordinary day he nearly runs over Isabel’s phone with his motorcycle and finds his orderly world quietly tilted by this candid, curious stranger who seems to be walking around with history in her pocket.

As Isabel and Malcolm explore the village together, they retrace moments from Olivia and Lyon’s past, comparing what the diary says to what modern Pennyroyal Green remembers. The contrast between centuries gives the story a reflective, slightly bittersweet tone. Old houses, churchyards, and that famous oak tree all look different when you are standing under them with someone who understands how much has been lost and how much has survived.

At its core, Pennyroyal Today is about legacy and choice. Isabel has to decide what it means to claim a family that never knew she existed, while Malcolm has to decide whether he can step out of the comfortable grooves of a life devoted only to patients, neighbors, and duty. Their romance carries the DNA of the earlier books, but it is firmly rooted in present day problems and pleasures.

It is a natural next step if you have finished the Pennyroyal Green series and are not quite ready to leave the village behind. You can technically read Malcolm and Isabel on its own, but it resonates most when you already care about the long ago couple whose diary quietly nudges two modern people toward their own happy ending.
